In an interview with KSHE 95, METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo said that the lot of bands as they getting older lose passion for writing music, stating that with METALLICA it’s opposite.
He says (as transcribed by Ultimate-Guitar.com) “We love what we do and the passion’s there – that’s the most important thing. As you get older, a lot of [classic] bands – they lose passion to write songs. You see that happening a lot.
“With us, it’s the opposite – we have too many song ideas. We have to condense it all. It’s like, we put on our instruments and we’re teenagers again.”
Focusing on the physical aspect, Robert added: “With METALLICA‘s music, there’s a certain physicality to it, and the stages are big, so there’s more likelihood for an injury.
“James has already had surgery on his neck and his back. I think Dave Mustaine – same thing. Corey from SLIPKNOT, Tom Araya from SLAYER – same thing, neck surgery! So, heavy metal will take you down. [Laughs] You gotta be ready for that.”
METALLICA‘s Hardwired… to Self-Destruct was released as a double album on November 18, 2016 by their vanity record label Blackened Recordings. It is their first studio album in eight years following Death Magnetic (2008), marking the longest gap between two studio albums in the band’s career. It is also their first studio album not to feature songwriting contributions from Kirk Hammett since he joined the band in 1983, and their first studio album released through Blackened.
